SAP R/3 release : 06/07/1992

  • SAP Architecture
SAP 3 Tier Architecture Notes : LINK

It is called R/3 bcos, it has 3 componenets
- Presentation Layer
- Application Layer
- Database Layer

I think application layer is the software.... It is the ABAP Stack(?). Initally, this was ITS ( Internet.??), but later SAP has come up with addition of more components along with ITS like (?), and it is called Netweaver.. It has more in-built functionality than inital version(4.5 etc).. The new one is implemented from ECC6.

  • Database
GoTo System --> Status --> Database Data
Here you can see the database system being used.
Most of the times, SAP used IBMs DB2. The thing to note here is that,
IBM uses the name DB2 for their product. But on the SAP side, the name actually changes depending on the operating system platform.

DB2 – Mainframe
DB4 – iSeries ( Used to be known as AS/400)
DB6 – Linux / Unix / Windows.

Note:iSeries is IBM's midrange server line, designed for small businesses and departments in large enterprises. The product line, formerly known as AS/400 (still the preferred name among many long-time users ), was renamed in 2000 with the introduction of the V5R1 operating system and 800 line of servers.
